I recently met up with a friend to celebrate her birthday. After quite a lot of deliberation, we settled for dinner in a lovely Thai restaurant overlooking the docks in East London. The restaurant had excellent reviews and the ambience was welcoming and cozy. It  was the perfect spot for a lovely Friday evening in summer.

The celebrant had offered me a ride to the restaurant, which I joyfully accepted. We set off much later than planned and my friend drove in a haste. We missed a few turns here and there, due to our impatience. One of those missed turns was a major one that took us from the East to the South in seconds.

We drove for over a mile before arriving at a U-turn. As we turned, I noticed some parked cars by the side of the road. My friend suddenly stopped behind one of them. After waiting for about 5 mins, I gave in and asked, “Why are we waiting here?” Her response took me by surprise, “We are waiting for the cars in front of us to drive off.” I informed her that the cars were parked and empty. We drove off laughing about it. Though I teased her about it all through dinner; who waits behind a parked car on a bright summer evening – No Excuses.

As I reflected on the events later that evening, I couldn’t help but ponder on the similarity with my friend stopping behind a parked vehicle and people stopping whilst on their way to reaching their dreams. We embark on projects, set “new year resolutions” and stop abruptly. Often times the reasons are justifiable to us, because we see what seem to symbolise a stop sign.

You may have read about the famous electricity bulb inventor, Thomas Edison. Well, contrary to popular belief, he did not invent the electrical light bulbs. It had been in existence for many years. Many other inventors had worked on prototypes to make it cheaper. Mr Edison however wanted to make electricity so cheap that only the rich would burn candles. He attempted this over 1000 times before he finally got his desired result. Even when his peers gave up, he carried on.

Often times we need to do an assessment of our abandoned projects. Doing this will give us an insight into why some things went in the right direction whilst others went pear shaped.

Set your sail and carry on if you are intentional about achieving your goals.

It was the summer of 2010. I had a job that I did not enjoy much. I wanted a new role and one closer home but none was forth coming. The usual response from recruiters was that I lacked the experience for my desired role. Coupled with the fact that the UK was in the middle of a recession at that time. I remember one of my routine days. I had just finished praying (under my breath) at my desk and went to pick-up some printing from the printer when God said these words to my spirit- “Come take a walk with me.” I was quite elated. I was certain that he was about to tell me something exciting. Why else would he tell me to take a walk with him I thought. Without wasting too much time, I grabbed my bag and dashed out of the office.

My office was located next to the motorway and I felt led to walk round the outer perimeter of the building. As I walked, I saw a number of cars zooming past at high speed. I must have walked round the building twice, waiting to hear the great things I had perceived God wanted to share with me. But I heard nothing. As I walked back to my desk, I wondered if I had heard wrongly or if it was just mere mind games.

A couple of weeks later, God said to me, “I asked you to take a walk with me so that you could see and hear the cars on their journey to their destinations.” He said “although all those cars were on that same road, they were all going to different destinations. The driver is the one who knows the route to take, he knows the turns on the road and he controls the speed at which the car moves. It would be wrong for another driver to follow a car unless it was certain that they are going to the same destination and were already in agreement.” Then he said, “Trust me as I take you on this journey of life.”

Those words changed my life. I have since learnt that as a Christian, I have to trust God completely with my life. Life is a Journey and everyone’s journey is different. We have to let God take us on our individual journeys in order to arrive at the destination that he pre-determined for us. There’s absolutely no point following someone else’s route or getting apprehensive when it seems like others have overtaken you on “your journey.” Through our fellowship with the Holy Spirit and as we study God’s word, we get an inclination of our journey and the things we ought to do in order to get to the pre-determined destination.

The Best Journey A Man Can Make In Life Is A Journey Made With Jesus.

“I know the plans I have for you,” announces the Lord. “I want you to enjoy success. I do not plan to harm you. I will give you hope for the years to come.” Jeremiah 29:11 NIRV
